Mommy Confessions

Thankful

By Rebecca Benson December 2, 2013

It is Thanksgiving break and it has been blissfully peaceful this week in my house even with the kids here. Yes they are fighting like cats and dogs. The television has been blaring non-stop and the one kid has been immersed in Minecraft since she got home from school on that Friday. Yep it is peaceful because we don't have to travel anywhere and we can just stay snuggled in the house with this cold snap. For that I am thankful for.

This is such a wonderful time of year as well as one of the busiest times of year. We rush around shoving as much as we can in the month of December so just taking it easy this last week of November has been blissful for all of us. Even my hubby is relaxing even though he is still working this week.

Yes part of me misses the big family gatherings of my youth, where we would be forced to wear our Sunday best to attend dinner at the Grandparents' house. Only to arrive and be forced into hard labor by setting up tables as well as the table. Glad Grandma wasn't particular about how it looked. All she cared about was that everyone had a fork to shove the food in.

I admit to missing the tiffs my Mom and Aunt would get over how my Mom would mash the potatoes. I think one year a masher and threats were involved and the following year my Aunt made a point to get there earlier than us so the potatoes wouldn't be lumpy.  Good times were had all around.

It is nice to be able to make a smaller turkey that takes about two hours than having that 20 pound monster making the house feel like a sauna all day. It is nice to just lay around in our pajamas watching the Macy's Day parade without being rushed into getting dressed and over to all the relatives houses to give our Thanksgiving wishes.

This year I am thankful for our health and over all happiness. We had a great year but the time sure is flying by. It is hard to believe at the end of this holiday season, my little boy is going to be four. It was just a short time ago, we were eagerly awaiting his arrival.  I am thankful that I have a family that we can create traditions with each and every year. The kids look forward to decorating the house and seeing Santa Claus about a hundred different times.

December is going to be a wonderful month for us with all the wonderful things we do as a family. I have lots planned for the kids already. They are excited for the parades, gifts and for the family who is traveling to see us this year. Most of all they are excited for that darn Elf or Elves to show up.

So with that I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and enjoy this most wonderful time of year.
