They say you can't go home but then what have I been doing for the last few weeks.... sleeping on the parents couch while the kids spread out on air mattresses while enjoying being "home". Well it is where I grew up, but home is 1200 miles south with my own house and nice bed, oh do I miss my bed which I have been told has been taken over by the pets, so they won't be happy on my return.
I always take the kids for a period of time each summer to visit the grandparents and my brother. The first year we came two weeks as well as the second time, then last year we came for three weeks and this year close to a month (28 days total we will be away from Houston). I love visiting the family but the time flies when we are here. We have these grand plans for things to do and as we settle in, we just chill. Plus it didn't help that Wisconsin had hotter, yes I said hotter, weather than Houston has been having which finally broke this last week of our visit.
One of the things we did this time was to go through the old photo books. I am amazed how much my mother and I looked alike as kids. We both had slight curls and thick hair. Hers stayed curly and mine well it has a life of its own so I thank my lucky stars each and every day for the flat iron. My seven year old decided she needed a picture of me from kindergarten as well as a photo of the popcorn truck that my Grandfather ran for nearly forty years and yes I did work in it as a kid.
It is fun to show your children where you grew up and the important things in your life when you were their age. My husband was here for the first week, and one day he and the seven year old went to where we graduated from college. She was excited to meet one of his old professors and see where our dorms were. In the years since we left (more than I will admit) the place has changed quite a bit but I still have fond memories of the place especially where my husband and I first kissed.
My parents are loving every minute of it because not only our my kids with them twenty four seven but my brother and sister in law have been coming over almost daily with my two year old niece so we have had bundles and bundles of great family time. It is nice to just be with them even just having dinner and hanging by the pool which has now become loved by the three year old who mind you wouldn't set foot in ours without crying but now swims with a life jacket the whole length of the pool.
Sadly our time here is short lived and I will begin the trek home with the two kids. I am going to miss my family but they plan on coming down around Halloween and we are going to try coming up for Christmas though I might regret that when I set foot in the state again and the temps are like 10 degrees.
So wish me luck on the drive home which I plan on taking slow with the two kids. I have plans to stop and be a tourist in places I have always wanted to see but let's be honest once I start the road, all we really want is to get home to where the hubby/ dad is as quick as we can because we sure do miss him ( he has been working on his side projects so he has stayed plenty busy while we are gone).
Rebecca Benson is a SAHM who someone how thought it was a good idea to drive 1200 miles with two kids but not crazy enough to have the dogs ( yes the thought did pass through my head). She loves her family but can't wait till she gets home and can craft some!
Rebecca Benson is a League City stay at home mom who has lived here since 2003 when her husband took a job on the International Space Station program. She followed soon after working on the same program for nearly six years when she started staying home with the kids. Rebecca loves to craft, scrapbook, sew, and embrace motherhood. Rebecca has a blog called Mommiedom ((http://queenmommiedom.blogspot.com/) where she talks about all the things in her life not just those “confessions”.
