Mommy Confessions

Resolutions

By Rebecca Benson January 7, 2012

All the presents and decorations from the holidays are put away and it is already one week into this New Year. Let me guess are you struggling with those resolutions you made on January 1? Most of us create lofty resolutions which let’s be honest are often already on the back burner for whatever reason.

According to the USA.gov (http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/New-Years-Resolutions.shtml), the most popular resolutions people make every year are as follows (in no particular order):

1.       Drink Less Alcohol

2.       Eat Healthy food

3.       Get a better education

4.       Get a better job

5.       Get fit

6.       Lose weight

7.       Manage debt

8.       Manage stress

9.       Quit smoking

10.   Reduce, reuse, and recycle

11.   Save money

12.   Take a trip

13.   Volunteer to help others

These are all great resolutions to make but as a mom, it is hard to always stay on task with a resolution. Every year I always make a resolution to lose weight and every year start out strong. I think after all the cookies, candy and large meals of the holidays, I am all about trying a new approach but sadly after about a month or so, I fall off the wagon back to my old ways.  Than the end of the year happens and well little to no weight has been loss.

This past year, I went all the way into July until I finally decided to start working on my weight. I was looking at pictures of myself at Disney World from the end of June and thought “Wow, I have gotten big!” I made a choice right then and there to lose weight but I knew that I need to have reasonable goals in doing so. I started off small like a goal of five pounds first. Once I met that goal, created another goal.

All of a sudden, 35 pounds were gone and two dress sizes and it was done with reasonable goals. So as I begin working on my resolutions, I turned them into more achievable goals. I notice as a mom, if I look at the small picture rather than the large one, it seems easier to achieve. Between all the things I do as a Mom, fitting small goals in was much easier than large ones.

So as you are working on your resolutions, make ones that are achievable for you. Another goal I would like to have this year is to save more money in our day to day spending because as a stay at home mom, every penny counts. I am finding the small ways we can do it like cutting out the extra stuff from the grocery store. Before I know all that little stuff will add up.

I know as a mom we have to walk this tightrope balance when it comes to our lives and we often let ourselves go for the good of our husband and children. That is why it is important to make time for you even if it is a small amount. Make a resolution for you to find that moment where you can lose weight, get more educated, save money or whatever your goal is for this year. You and your family will ultimately be better for it.
